Sherman County Community Foundation

With the support of generous donors, the Sherman County Community Foundation awards grants to local organizations—supporting projects in arts and culture, community development, education, environment, health, human services, recreation, and youth programs.

Our Grant Opportunities
The Sherman County Community Foundation offers grant opportunities on a quarterly basis, allowing local organizations to plan ahead and apply for funding throughout the year.

The Sherman County Community Foundation (SCCF) is an affiliate of the Greater Northwest Kansas Community Foundation (GNWKCF) in Bird City. Because of this partnership, when you click the Apply Now button, you’ll be directed to the Greater Northwest Kansas Community Foundation’s website to complete your application.
No worries—your grant request will still come back to SCCF for review and support right here in Sherman County.
General Grant Guidelines
Who is eligible to apply?
- The community foundation can make grants to the following entities:
- 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations
- Education
- Government
- Religious
- Individuals or organizations that do NOT fall into one of the above entities are encouraged to partner with a fiscal agent in one of those categories.
- If that is not possible, please contact the community foundation to see if your project still qualifies and if there are any additional reporting requirements
- Grants are typically restricted to the geographic areas served by the community foundation.
What type of support is funded?
- Projects or programs that serve the community and/or advance the mission of the organization.
- Seed money to establish or initiate a new project, program, or organization, including operating expenses
- Capacity building or activities that strengthen an organization to increase its ability to fulfill its mission, including technology & equipment, professional development & training, additional staff to implement a new program, etc.
- Capital improvements including new construction or renovation of a facility.
- Endowment funds to provide permanent and long-term support for an organization or program.
- Note: The grants committee will consider requests for endowment funds, but it is unlikely to receive funding unless it supports a specific initiative.
The following grant requests will NOT be considered:
- Incomplete, incorrect or late applications.
- Political projects of any kind.
- Organizations or projects that practice discrimination of any kind.
- Operating deficits or retirement of debt (if the project has already happened or been paid for, this is considered funding debt).

Awarded: $5,000.00
Teen / Meeting Room
SCCF has awarded $5,000 for a renovation project designed to better serve the community. According to library director, Karen Gillihan, “Remodeling the existing teen/meeting room will provide a comfortable, safe space for young people and…our current meeting rooms are consistently busy each day.”

Awarded: $4,250.00
Main Street Summer Theater Festival
This year’s production is “James and the Giant Peach Jr” and will provide Sherman County youth with the opportunity to learn and take part free of charge. Students selected will rehearse 4–5 days a week starting in May and the show is scheduled for the beginning of July.

Campus Beautification Project
The grant cites a campus-wide effort to increase outdoor social spaces for students. The proposal involves a waste tire bench project to enhance the landscape with sustainable and durable outdoor furnishings such as benches and picnic tables.

Surprise Teacher Wishlists
Teachers were surprised with a classroom shopping spree! They were shuttled to Walmart in Goodland to spend $50 on items they needed for their classrooms. The site council met teachers back at the high school with cookies and hot cocoa to show their appreciation for all of our teachers’ hard work!
